In the short story, Battle Royal, a young African American kid was selected to give a speech for his communities top white citizens, instead he was pulled into participating in a "Hunger games," like event where he compete and fight against other African American kids for a college scholarship. But the main purpose of the whole event is to have those African American kids fight each other for the white peoples entertainment.
In the short story, The Lottery, a small village of 300 people hold a traditional drawing each year to see who will be stoned to death. An old woman who is all for the drawing, however when she wins the drawing, immediately she is completely against it realizing she is going to die a horrible death. It is not clear on why they continue to do this each year even though the purpose of the tradition is seemingly forgotten.
For both stories violence plays a key role for others entertainment; the kids laugh in joy as they stoned the woman to death and the white people thrilled to watch a handful of African American kids fight each other for a scholarship. However I think these are the most strangest stories i have ever read, but there must be a deeper meaning to the story.
