Britta Tornberg The Lottery
This short story was quite interesting. I have seen several movies and literary work similar to the concept of the work. Titles include "Battle Royale", a movie made in Japan and the popular American title, "The Hunger Games".
I enjoyed the irony in this story very much. I like how the oldest man in the town feels if there was no lottery the village would return to a barbaric state. I think stoning someone to death is pretty barbaric. I also like the excitement Tessie shows to towards the lottery until it does not work out in her or her husbands favor and to make the matter worse she arrives late. When she is chosen for the lottery she tells the villagers that it is not fair and inhumane, when she enjoyed it every other year that she was not chosen.
I am quite questionable of the relationship that Tessie and her husband have. Her husband gladly hands her to the villagers and does not seem bothered while she is being stoned to death. Her husband actually tells her to be quiet when she is getting stoned. This piece seemed very relate able in a less intense fashion to many pople's daily lives. There are so many things we do not want to do that we are put in random drawings for such as jury duty or random drug testing at MMA. Lotteries are a semi organized system where a sort of government can watch/ control you without you knowing they are reall there... (kind of like 1984 but do not even get me started on that)
