battle royal
In the short story "Battle Royal" an African American man is struggling against racism in order to stand up for what he thinks is right. The story begins by the man who is the narrator by talking about his grandfather that passed away and how he was going to deliver speech about what the grandfather taught him. But when he goes out in public to do so, he is acted by white men. These white men make him and several other African American males fight each other, and even though the man does not want to fight his fellow men he does so anyways just so he has the opportunity to make the speech afterwards, even though this won't be done. The next story I read this week was about a town that had a lottery once a year. The lottery was established to kill a member of its community each year, for a reason I still do not understand. But people argue that the lottery isn't fair and that the other towns around it have gotten rid of the lottery but the old men believe that the lottery is essential. So the lottery goes on and the girl that is picked by the lottery is stoned to death.
