Britta Tornberg- A Cask of Amontillado
A Cask of Amontillado
I do not feel revenge is a good reason to kill anyone. I you want things to change, then change someones perspective rather than just killing them. By getting revenge, you are no better than the person who did wrong to you. Also, if you are planning to kill someone or choose to do something morally wrong, you should face consequences rather than try to escape them. Montresor may be able to escape imprisonment but he will never escape guilt.
Montresor states that his heart feels sick due to the catacombs. I feel that this phrase senses guilt. Montresor becomes uneasy being in a damp place full of human skeletons and death. He also knows that a man is in the catacombs because of him. I find this short story ironic because it takes place at the same time as carnival. Carnival is typically a time of joy and merriment for so many people, yet Fortunato is murdered after carnival. Another tragedy is that Montresor uses Fortunato's love for wines against him because Fortunato is too intoxicated to realizes he is being lead to his death by Montresor's trickery.
