In Mathew Arnold's poem, "Dover Beach," describes a time where Europe was the center of civilization of the world. In it he describes the surrounding oceans as if it was ultimate great divide that not only separated countries, but also marked the boundaries for Europe. As time progressed people began to explore outside of Europe discovering new places expanding the vision of the world. Once the ultimate boundary, Europe's surrounding oceans no longer marked the boundaries for all of civilization. Thus no longer as high and mighty as it once use to be.

In Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, " We Wear the Mask," talks about people who hold back and hide their true emotions. Although the people may feel angry, sad, or broken they always look as if they had high spirits. While under going some of the negative emotions in life, attempting to cover them up will help them look for a better tomorrow.
