The reading that I personally found interesting this week was "Hills like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway. The first time that we read it in class I literally had no idea what it was about, or what a white elephant was. I could tell that there was some sort of story within the story just because of the way that Hemingway went about writing it. It wasn't until Brita pointed out in class that it could possibly be about a couple talking about getting an abortion that all the licked and jumped out at me. Some of the most obvious symbolism that was in the story is how they were travailing by train. I believe that the train is meant to symbolize that whichever path that they pick there is no turning back. Another part of the story that caught my eye was when they were talking about how the drink tastes like licorice. It seems very little and unimportant but the way that Hemingway went about writing it makes it seem as though there is some deeper meaning. I am not sure exactly what it could be but I have a feeling that it means something. I really think that the class discussions helped in my understanding of the story.
