Keith Henderson Blog#3
Going into our discussion in class on tuesday, I did not understand the meaning behind metamorphosis. I was thinking in to much of a literal sense, and was stuck on how and why Gregor turned into a bug. After discussing the possibilities of symbolism in class and then completing the reading, the story started to come together. I realized this story isn't about revenge and Gregor turning into a bug isn't a form of punishment. Gregor's transformation symbolizes Gregor being isolated from other people and his lack of a social life. I think this story also symbolizes how selfish people can be. When Gregor first started providing for his family they were very thankful. Over time they took it for granted and just expected Gregor to provide for them. Once the tables turned and Gregor had his transformation, his families views of Gregor changed. They eventually believed that Gregor no longer existed and just wanted to get rid of the burden. This was a difficult story to analyze and I thought the symbolism was kind of a stretch, however it made me think a lot to find the true meaning of Metamorphosis.
