The Hills like White Elephants may seem like a simple story about two people having drinks at a bar waiting for a train, but there is much more to this story than what is just on the surface. Since literature can be interpreted in many different ways there are many speculations about what he is actually saying. Hemingway uses lots of symbolism in his writing, and throughout the story he brings up the word two. In my opinion he says this repeatedly because he is showing that the man does not want to have the child. The "two" being just the two of them. On the other hand the woman does want to have the child, she tries to get the man to be quiet so she can think over her decision. Although the woman is highly dependent on the man, she still does have a little free will when making this decision. In the end of the story the man brings the bags over to the other side of the station supposedly symbolizing that he is ok with her decision, but in my opinion I think he is not. Throughout the story he has opposed her decision and all of a sudden he now is ok with that? I don't think so, but this is just one persons opinion.
