Brendan Mclaughlin Blog#4
This week we read two stories, Battle royal and the Lottery. Both these stories seemed connected to me. I found them similar because in both of them the society is satisfying their boredom by watching/causing pain for somebody else in their community. In battle royal the white people force the young blacks to fight and then they electrocute them. Compared to the lottery where the community basically draws straws to see who gets stoned by everybody else that was in the lottery. This is done all for tradition. They talk about a northern community that is talking about stopping lotteries and the people at this lottery act like its crazy talk. They connect lotteries to corn harvest. Its almost like a sacrifice to the gods and in return they get a nice corn harvest.
