After reading the "Handsomest Drowned Man" I didn't understand why the author would write such a bazaar story about this man who washed up on the shore of a random village to then be treated like a god by the locals. After looking deeper into the story I than began to understand the meaning behind what Garcia was trying to say. At the end of the e the villagers give Estaban a big funeral with lots of flowers brought from all the neighboring villages. The villagers are still in awe from Estaban and their final wish is too make their village remembered as Estaban's village. So they bring all the flowers to the funeral hoping the smell attracts ships to their shore and for everyone to be able to tell that in fact it is Estaban's village. The villagers also decide to make they're homes bigger and brighter. By making their doorways wider, painting the walls with bright colors, and the floors stronger so Estaban would have been satisfied living in their homes. This symbolizes that in real life people should always try to strive for better things and to make what ever they have into something better by working hard and never being satisfied with the ordinary.
